Is it me, or is it a little weird that there are no performances or videos of lead single Break Anotha by Blake Lewis on youtube? You would think that there would be a huge media push for the debut album from the other semi finalist? I’m a little concerned that the album will end up the same way as Jordin whatsername (for more info see Yuri’s blog for an ace write up about it’s chart position) ~ which would be an utter crime, because it’s a valiant effort for anyone, but particularly someone who has come from the cashcow known as Idol. Kudos then to the record label for letting Blakes personality shine through and giving him almost carte blanche ~ he sometimes fails, but better to reach than tread the old familiar path. ADD is basically an extension of who Blake was on Idol and all the better for it. Working with almost do-able One Republic front man Ryan Tedder (who cowrote Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love), the album is a seamless blend of funk rock pop and electro. Almost Justin Timberlake-esque, but like Shayne Ward’s sophomore effort, just enough of the artist’s own personality to make it stand out. Break Anotha is part Maroon 5, part Missy Elliot and part JT, while Know My Name is probably a good place to start the Prince comparisons. Electro tinged tracks shine through on She Makes Me Lose It and I Choose Noise, which is possibly a mission statement for his second album. A few fillers in the middle that could be cut out, but once you go back and listen to the gloriously ridiculous Gots To Get Her (inspired by Putting On The Ritz) the magic starts again, and the skips get fewer as you try to understand the experiment in hand. A solid debut that signifies the start of a promising career…
