Interesting Facts about Eurovision Song Contest
The 1991 Eurovision was held in Rome, Italy. Originally, the choice was for San Remo, but international tensions made it necessary to choose Rome instead. San Remo is internationally known for its annual music festival - the rivalry hitting too close it home! At almost the last moment, the contest was moved to Studio 15 at the famous Cinecittà in Rome.
The ESC changed the rules in 1997 allowing performers to use recorded instrumental music rather than live musical bands. The archaic rules demanded that all instruments heard in the entry should also be present at the final performance.
A tragic disaster occurred in the 2000 Eurovision in The Netherlands. The broadcast had to be stopped halfway through the contest. Earlier in the day there was a huge fire at a fireworks importer, in the city of Enschede, causing a terrible explosion which took the lives of 22 people including 4 firemen.
Every day until May 8 I will be posting a music video of each one of the semi-finalists of the Eurovision Song Contest. On May 9, I will post the last three (my top favorites). Enjoy the videos!
