As part of ITV’s light entertainment motto for Saturday nights, the Kylie show was an absolute success - an ace showcase for her new album (which I am increasingly excited about), campy comedy clips (highlight being the cat fight between Dannii and Kylie above) and classic reinterpretations of old tunes. However as an exercise in good wig choice and smart make up application, it totally failed. Still that wasn’t enough to take away from the rather good hour of television that this was. I’ll deal with the interspersed clips first. Some were mildly amusing - Kylie addicted to horse racing so tells two nun fans to fuck off as she just lost eight fucking quid was titterworthy, as was her encounter with Jason D who didn’t remember who she was. The ones that worked best were when she poked fun at herself - the camera crew find a prosthetic arse and she pretends it’s a hat, her assistant (uniformly excellent throughout) dresses up in her clothes and tells her it should be him up there and the piece de resistance is an amazing catfight between Dan and Ky grabbing inspiration from Muriels Wedding, Charlies Angels and Dynasty. Now onto the music - there was a scant representation of old hits, and frankly though i am sure it was thrilling for Kylie to be singing Got To Be Certain and a quite nice Tears on my Pillow again, the electro remix of Can’t Get You Out Of My Head was better and a piano/orchestral version of I Believe In You was just lovely lovely lovely. The new stuff is pretty much brillo pad. Second single (?) Wow and dance floor epic The One are flawless exciting slices of pop. Sensitized is a fab as I recall from the leak thats been floating around. I absolutely fell in love with the two slower numbers - No More Rain should totally be this years Christmas number one and Cosmic is a universal anthem in waiting. Truly, this raised my anticipation levels for the new album to new heights. Aces.
