David Jordan Place In My Heart ~ At first I have to say, despite all the hype surrounding this guy, I thought it was a cover of a Charles and Eddie single (of Would I Lie To You “fame”), all plinky plinky beats and falsetto vocals. And it still has that sort of feel to it. However, it seems to be way more than that with clear influences of Prince and Terence Trent D’Arby in the music. It’s a gently chugging pop/r’n'b groove which uses dramatic chords at random intervals to express emotion and give depth to the perky poppy sound contained within. I hated it at first, which is why I haven’t written about it before, but the hammond organs, silky smooth vocals (first Shayne Ward on If That’s Ok With You and now David Jordan) and catchy chorus have totally won me over and now i can’t get enough of it. That’s the truth. Would I lie to you baby?
Leona Lewis Run/Angel ~ As Leona continues her deserved stay at number one with the retrotastic Bleeding Love, all eyes are already on her follow up single, the Stargate produced Angel. It’s another nod to the innocent Mariah pop of the early 90s with a shuffling beat and a sweetly sung chorus full of hope and dreams for the future. It’s fairly similar to Bleeding Love which gives me slight pause as the formula could soon wear thin. At the moment though, it takes me back to a time when mariah covered up, 90210 was cutting edge teen drama and i was discovering that getting contacts and a decent haircut makes a world of difference in the bum loving clubs. For proof of what Leona is capable of, check out her adorable cover of Run. Full of restraint, yet packed with emotion this builds into a powerful anthemic tune that gives new life to an old favourite. While i’m not convinced the Leona album will be an out of the park critical triumph, she certainly has done better than coming up with an album of treacly covers…
