I was gonna call this little segment the Perfect Storm, in “loving” tribute to the well dodgy movie where at the end there is a silhouette of someone waving bye bye in the sky as they die. What the fuck was that all about?! Then I realised it had absolutely nothing to do with the post I wanted to write, and I had clearly overdosed on the cough drops again. Anyway, in a perfect world (or maybe my fake world for fake week) Simon Curtis (have I ever mentioned him?!) would be readying the release of Pop Messiah from his epic Alter Boy album. And he would be sitting in his LA mansion thinking to himself, hmmm, I must do a really good b-side to this song that no-one has heard before. And it must be topical. And it must be about how ace Britney used to be. And then he had to go and lie down for a bit, because that’s an awful lot of thinking for anyone isn’t it? But when he got back up and put his hoodie and sunglasses on, he knocked up Britney. OK, let me clarify that – he wrote what is essentially a love letter to his pop idol Britney telling her to sort herself out. And that my friends is Detox – available for streaming on Simon’s new myspace page and also on my myspace page. Not only does it pay homage to Me Against The Music, but it references a plethora of Britney songs – Born To Make You Happy, Boys, You Drive Me Crazy, Lucky, Mona Lisa, Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know, Stronger, Hit Me Baby One More Time, et al. Reflecting on those brilliant times, Simon urges Britney to detox her life and get back to being ace. A sentiment I can agree with. Oh a couple of things about the song – whoever does the really deep voice bits has got quite a sexy voice! It’s quite sparse and electo-y in an alluring sort of way! It’s full of the usual Simon brilliance – pop culture references, intruiging production and falsetto vocals! And! It starts with Gilmore Girls speed lyrics claiming “you’re up against the people trying to take back your music, it’s like a reclamation you against the heat, you gotta get in the zone”. It’s a perfect new b-side.
