Oooh! Parka are very good indeed. They are a little bit disco, a little bit indie and a little bit rock n roll. And a lot addictive. Plus, they live in an old converted strip club that still has the pole in it, which sounds a bit like a dream come true. Their debut single Disco Dancer was out late last year and got lots of attention from “we know music” people like that annoying Zane Lowe bloke. And quite rightly so – it zips along at a million miles per hour with a vibrating guitar edge and plenty of muted horns that give it an utterly frenetic feel that is completely at ease with the song itself. It’s hard not to imagine hundreds of sweaty people, crammed into clubs, singing the chorus at the top of their lungs. Luckily, there is more to them than one tune as If You Wanna demonstrates starting off with lots of whoa-whoa-whoas from the boys, before launching into a brilliantly catchy chorus urging you to let go of your inhibitions and get on with life. There is something gloriously uplifting about it. There’s a touch of Franz Ferdinand and Killers in their music, and dare I say, the exuberance and ability to conjour up ridiculously catchy melodies a la McFly. If you want to listen to something this weekend that is just so gleeful you can’t help but smile, then check out Parka. You won’t be sorry… Ruthiepoos, you will love this!

More indie disco dancing from the brilliantly titled The Wombats caught my ear this week after a rather amusing feature in NME. And like Parka they are completely at ease with not taking their music too seriously and just having a lot of fun with it. And that is half the charm. I’m all for my serious musicians with their carefully studied lyrics and amazing piano-strings instrumentation ,but The Wombats are like a bucket of ice cold water in the face on a hot summers day (something England isn’t seeing a lot of this year…) – just utterly refreshing. They make no apologies for their brand of hyperactive pop wonders. Backfire At The Disco has a tint of Young Knives about it, as singer Matt regales the listener with his tale of spurned love and stinging cheek. You can’t beat a good whoo-hoo in a song, and this doesn’t disappoint. Take time to listen to the lyrics that eschew Mike Skinner’s grittiness for Lily Allen realism. Just marvellous. Oh! And I utterly love the tribute to Cliff Richard’s roller skating in the video above. How I chortled. All together now “It backfired at the disco when you slapped me at the disco-ohoh-oh!”…
