I’m always up for some creative use of piano within todays pop music scene. I think that is why I liked Keane so much before they botched it all up on the second album. Hurrah then for Dash Reflex – a trio of young blokes who immerse themselves in an eclectic mix of musical genres to create something smooth and exciting for the rest of us. Mixing classic 50s rock and roll with elements of jazz and even a smidge of techno is a brave move, but one that ultimately pays off as it is clearly the harmonies and melodies of the songs that shine through. Intricate and clever lyrics perfectly complement the lush backing instrumentation on songs like Quiet Revolution and Strange Epiphany. Sheer enthusiasm and love for what they do shines through on tunes like Sirens and Perfect Hero, and it is clear that this is the start of something very special indeed. Be sure to check out their myspace page and let me know what you think...
If you are looking for something a little out of the box, that embraces the sheer energy and vitality that pure guitar rock can bring, then you could do a lot worse than Canadian band The Peaks. Nurturing the sound that reminds the listener of bands as diverse as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, U2 and even Depeche Mode, their debut single Turn You On does just that as a driving beat hurtles you towards it’s melodic chorus sung with such passion that it’s almost uncontainable on your iPod headphones. Their debut album Out Of The Box contains many lyrical gems of musical force that are resonant with the fear, anger, joy and heartache that love brings, mixed into a rollicking musical feast. Be sure to listen to the epic ballad On The Edge that will be sung from front row to rafters when the boys come to tour England later this year. Along with Mohair, one of my favourite new rock-cabaret bands...
