First there were the threequels. Then Harry did his most mesmerising movie yet. Hairspray cast a different kind of spell over me with it’s feel good mojo and catchy bits, that more than made up for the disappointment that was High School Musical 2. And now the other movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer as an aging has been has mesmerised me to equally obsessive levels. Based on the Neil Gaiman novel Stardust, this is an enchanting tale of love, devotion, destiny, betrayal, sleights of hand, accepting the inner self and the age old battle between good and evil. Oh and cross dressing pirates. In essence, it’s a bedtime story, a fairytale, but one so entrancing that, much like the object of desire of many of the film’s characters, it will remain timeless and sparkling. It is actually 3 stories that seamlessly converge onto one another – a witch desires eternal youth; an heir longs to be king and a shop boy just wants to be loved. Inter-woven from the start, it’s the characters that bring this tale to life. Robert De Niro is on fine form, Michelle excellent as the 400 year old witch desiring youth and beauty. It’s Claire Danes who shines brightest along with utterly charming newcomer, Charlie Cox. Only Ricky Gervais disappoints (as usual) playing the same character he has already done to death in The Office, Extras, Night At The Museum, The Simpsons, etc. Still, it’s a forgiveable slip in a movie, that like The Princess Bride, is destined for the ages. I’m sad to hear from D’Luv that it has been a bit of a flop L However, the Take That song at the end is rather delish... Bring on the dvd!
