~ sergey dancing on ice ~

Sergey Lazarev ~ On a complete whim thanks to this rather fantastic write up at PPG, I ordered Sergey’s debut album Don’t Be A Fake and then of course had to pay a fortune (not that much really) for TV Show from ebay... Hurrah! And what a poppy little gem it is too. That is to say it is filled with tunes that are packed to the brim with joyous pop sounds, not that it is a gem that looks like the flower known as poppy. Stunning single and ballad-esque Everytime is definitely a highlight, weaving Sergeys sweet vocal through a pulsing 80s-esque Erasure inspired almost but not quite ballad. Phew, that was quite the description. Johnny Hates Jazz cover Shattered Dreams takes the original, puts it in a soda stream, injects the fizz and then enjoys with a nice few ice cubes and a crazy straw. Yes it’s that good. Other pure pop slices of joviality pepper the album with no trace of cynicism or “i’m really too good for this” that sometimes infects other pop albums. Ben Adams penned Girlfriend positively crackles with snap crackle and pop, Shiver is nicely sung and He Said She Said is much better than the same title different song by Ashley “I was too busy to promote my album first time round, i just figured you’d buy it anyway” Tisdale. Plus, not only is Sergey a darn fine looking dude, he also publically spoke out against the violence at Moscow Pride, is friends with Tatu and starred on Dancing On Ice Russia. Could there be a more perfect new popstar? (Well Simon Curtis, yes! But other than that...)
