Sometimes days at work are Le Poo for ever so many reasons. Especially when you work for a charity and you are reliant on grants and funding and stuff, and then applications don't always work out :/ But days like that are made better by new Le Kid music (see Popjustice; more on that tomorrow) and always always always by listening to the exuberant Matt Dusk album. It's just so gosh darn jolly perky and uplifting. Even though it's been out for a while, I'm in the mood to extol it's virtues today so please read on!
Matt Dusk ~ Good News: Matt Dusk has been around forever and a day (whatever that means). This isn't his first album, but it's definitely his best, most commercial and most enjoyable. That doesn't mean you shouldn't check out some of his other work because you should. Just that this shines as one of those album that just works from start to finish. Of course it helps that it is entirely imbued with feel good vibes, uplifting melodies, gorgeous vocal, catchy choruses and general merriment & happiness. For those that don't know, Matt is essentially a jazz vocalist, but this album is so much more than that. He takes his "Mr Cool" persona and works jazz and broadway sounding tracks into a more modern pop landscape, at times even utilising a more swedish/euro-pop sound - and most importantly makes it work. The title track and lead single is a delicious slice of quirky pop that totally deserves to be as ubiquitous as Michael Buble's Haven't Met You Yet. Wouldn't Change A Thing (the most honest happy anniversary song I've possibly ever heard and just too delightfully cute) and On Vacation continue the fun, with the latter having a sexy sax breakdown that is possibly the most glorious since Debbie Gibson's Should've Been The One. He uses these songs to expand on the proven pop-jazz formula to make it somewhat more innovative and contemporary. Feels Good is a brilliant almost Cherry Poppin Daddies influenced song that has a brilliant New Orleans feel to it and wouldn't really feel out of place in Disney's The Princess And The Frog. It's Disney, it's broadway, it's pop! Love Attack is total euro-trash and so much the better for it - it's a lush, layered song with a throbbing beat and would easily stand up alongside anything Darin or Mans Zelmerlow might sing. But for those fans of a good crooning (and let's face it, who isn't secretly in need of that?!), there's the softer side of Matt on some lovely ballads like Love Don't Let Me Go (where the listener is practically seduced by the dreamy vocals), the smoky nightclub feel of One For My Baby and the highlight of the album, the epic and wondrous It Can Only Get Better - a song better than any prescription anti-depression drug. Total enjoyment from start to finish. Oh, and yes incase you were wondering - Matt Dusk=Stone Cold Foxy Dude :)
Potential singles: Good News; Wouldn't Change A Thing; On Vacation; Feels Good; It Can Only Get Better (backed with ANYTHING from his ace Christmas album)
More Matt: Matt is also currently working on a tv show with Jason Priestley that features music by him (matt not Jason, obviously). You can check out the trailer to Call Me Fitz here...
