Single selection: A trio of Swedish pop delectables (Le Kid, Eric Saade, Straight Up)
Posted by ai at 7:48 AMAnd so the new year continues. New year, new everything it seems. Starbucks has gone for a new logo (have they learnt nothing from New Coke and Gap? Though a new uniform for the male baristas would be nice ~ dark olive green shirt with black tie please). We need a new microwave (this is what happens when it is on and you forget to put anything in it!). A foxy new shirt and tie combo for work. I look snazzy. New confectionary displays at shop on way to work have swapped Malteaser Santas for Cadbury's Creme Eggs. I'm filled with gooey goodness. Here are 3 top notch new tunes from my potential May holiday destination of Sweden. hurrah!
Le-Kid ~ Mr. Brightside:
Remember when The Killers burst onto the side with the effervescent part pop, part indie-disco, fully amazing Mr Brightside? Oh how I swooned over B-Flo. Now imagine a studio version of this by the sparkling Swedish soon to be pop sensations Le Kid! It is possibly everything you dreamed it would be AND MORE. They've performed it live in the past, but a quick trip to the studio has seen their little caterpillar version transform into the most joyous and poptastic butterfly - it's a bouncing off the ceiling, electro-synth version that sounds like it was a Le Kid song all along. They've imbued every nuance and note with sheer glee (the feeling, not the tv show). that shows a complete and utter love of pop music and how to use that love to create something magnificent. It's completely in sync with their already glorious pop singles Mercy Mercy and We Should Go Home Together (one of my top singles of 2010 top pop single fans) and has me incredibly excited for their melodifestivalen track coming our way in February. Oh My Gawd. Thanks to Scandipop and Swedish Stereo for the heads up. PS, doesn't Anton (centre) look bloody gorgeous above?! PPS, it's free to download - click the link above the pic!!
Eric Saade ~ I'm Still Loving It:
Wellity, wellity, wellity. The adorable young Mr Saade has certainly capitalised on his melodifestivalen success from last year hasn't he? He produced one of my favourite albums of 2010 (which included some massive pop moments such as Manboy, Masquerade and It's Gonna Rain. Anyone else sad that the Fashion song wasn't released as a single?!) and rather than rest of his no doubt pretty laurels, he has launched himself straight into album number two! The first single from this (presumably this year's melodifestivalen track will be single number two) is a darker sounding track that reminds me of Justin Timberlake's Cry Me A River. It's co-penned by Eric and Anton (from Le Kid above!) and mixes definite hints of r'n'b influences into Eric's normally poppy tunes. It works incredibly well and the chorus that seems unassuming at first continues to meld it's way onto your brain until you find yourself humming it all the live long day. A brave yet ultimately successful comeback for Eric. Another album that promises to be a highlight of 2011. Yay!
Straight Up! ~ It Gets Better:
Scintillating pop duo Straight Up! have produced some of the most filthy but addictive pop tunes of 2010. They are like the pre-cum of pop! Listening to their tunes (such as Twink and XXXmas) is like your first trip into a dark room at your local gay bar. You feel ever so naughty, but it's so deliciously dirty and wonderfully right :P Their latest track however sees a more serious side from the boys. It's no less throbbing, no less pulsating than their other electro-pop tunes yet showcases a more topical issue of the bullying and harassment of gay kids that still sadly goes on all over the world today. Matching these lyrics to a more sombre but no less glorious instrumental works well and proves that these good time guys can tackle the good and bad of gay life with a gritty realism that ultimately gives way to a more sunny optimism . And hey, it does indeed get better. Still, I'd still quite like a down and dirty bondage ballad next time please ;)
More soon. Probably.
