I'm not particularly in the mood to blog today. But it will take my mind off the hideous amount of work and the fact that the abcess has once again appeared on poor dazpants spine. So he is in lots of pain and might have to have another operation. Poor lamb :( Now it's his turn for a pity party - slightly worse than tripping over a pigs head methinks. Still, we have Austria to look forward to!! And, the new Kylie video for The One has cheered us both up a bit, and got me thinking that probably pop stars around the country are preparing for their christmas marketing ploys as I speak/type (kylie - Cosmic backed with That's Why They Write The Love Songs will do nicely). So with that in mind, it's time for a little career advice...

So the rumour goes, pop is going to be proper back by Christmas. There are all sorts of debates about it on websites like BBC Entertainment and Digital Spy. The indie kids think pop has gone. The cool kids think pop is only Girls Aloud or the Ting Tings. The clubbers think it has to be different quirky and unusual or it's not pop. And really the pop kids just don't care - if they like the music then great. if not, then there are plenty of songs out there to entice them. Pooey to musical snobbery I say. I still haven't forgiven the Saturdays for forcefully pointing out there music wasn't cheesy pop! WHO CARES! If i like it i do if i don't i don't. That said, I think should these pop kiddies follow some sage advice from someone who really knows nothing about how these things work, they may be successful in securing the Christmas number two (seeing how XFactor has the number one slot sewn up!)

  • McFly ~ if these boys are canny they will release one of the four tunes from their deluxe edition album as the second single, which should secure them at least a week in the top ten in September prior to the album's commercial release. But please please please go for the emotive Last Song as the Christmas single. It still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Plus everyone will have Guitar Hero for Christmas so will be able to work their air guitar magic to it. Fabbo.
  • Girls Aloud/Sugababes ~ two hard and fast rules that they never seem to learn. No ballads and don't rush release the Christmas song if your album lead off single has only come out in November. Rumour has it both enduring girl groups have singles out this autumn, and a decent foot tapping pop stomper of epic dancefloor proportions will probably tide them over nicely through the Christmas period, and increase their album sales better than a quickly released ballad during Christmas week that will peak at number 10.
  • The Feeling - should you really bother? It's not because I don't adore you because I do. But the fickle british public seem to have abandoned you. I can't help but feel though that your fans would lap up Won't Go Away with a festive cover and a festive original on the flip sides. Probably remixed by the lovely mrs Jones. It will sell hundreds :(
  • Westlife - rumour has it that you are having a year off from your tried and tested routine of releasing a single in late October and then one the week before Christmas before doing piss all the rest of the year. But if you do release something for your 10th anniversary in pop, could you do something strangely brillo like your duet with Donna Summer on No More Tears? ta boys.
  • William of Young - oh you look so satorial on your Changes single cover. And it's a lovely laid back jazzy affair. But for Christmas, it is essential to give something funk ridden like Switch It On or Your Game. That is all.
  • Vanessa Amorosi - ah Loch Nessa. As Adem calls her. She needs to get a move on if she is to ride the Christmas charts like seabiscuit. Fling out Kiss Your(i) Mama right now with a remix of Absolutely Everybody right now to remind the UK how shouty dance pop you are, then wow us all at Christmas with the lovely lovely and ideally titled Perfect. Perfect.
  • Simon Curtis - sadly Simon's time to shine won't be til 2009! Ooo it rhymes. I'm practically a lyricist! Anyway if it was his time to shine during this festive season's starbucksed red cup pop revival it would be with Put Your Makeup On. What better way to usher in the renaissance of pop music (really, did it ever go away?!) with a song that is the theme to Popjustice AND has the brilliant line "as a kid I got a lot of shit for/liking my music "what is it for?"/"You should listen to this because it gives more"/Yeah but it sounds lousy on the dancefloor" Well put.
  • Same Difference - they are number one in the PJ Almighty. It is rumoured that their debut album is very poptastic in the extreme. Perhaps a ballad would suit them this Christmas, just as long as they put their very adorable version of All I Want For Christmas is you and fly around like below. And sean must be on a tricycle in the video. That would make me very happy.
So, to conclude this rather fluff piece of nonsense, here are some festive faves/should've been festive chart faves from pop acts gone by. In no particular order...
  1. Atomic Kitten - Last Goodbye
  2. A*Teens - Shame Shame Shame
  3. Liberty X - Holding On for You
  4. Gareth Gates - Say It Isn't So
  5. Steps - It's The Way You Make Me Feel
  6. McFly - Ballad of Paul K
  7. William Young - Love The One You're With
  8. Blue - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
  9. SClub7 - Perfect Christmas
  10. Magnus Carlsson, Wrap Myself In Paper
  11. Abba - Happy New Year
