It is quite common for a song to be announced that you are dizzy with anticipation for - usually it's one of your favourite artists who has brand new music coming out and the waiting & excitement for the time when can actually sooth your ears with listening to the promised tunes sends you into a frenzy; indeed the wait is deliriously agonising yet exquisitely painful in it's longing... Imagine though a project so immense that it contains many of your pop obsessions, brimming with new songs that team with a theme. It is a whirling dervish of musical genius that has one goal - to make you dance to some of the best in upcoming artistical sensation.
It is actually the biggest musical event for me since melodifestivalen - and one even more exciting. Ballroom Remixed has been announced this very day and features several of my very favourite acts that have featured on this blog many times over the past months and years. At the bottom of this blog, you'll find a list of and links to some of the artists involved along with my favourite musical accomplishments of theirs (so far - this album could change everything). What makes this even more special is the people behind the scenes of this epic project. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't twirled around a room to the lyrical insight of musical impressario Charlie Mason (who, among many fine others, wrote Eric Saade's Upgrade and current Disney Channel smash Determinate). I've been wowed at the creative art work of Liam Curry (who now turns his hand to several co-writes on this album). I've grabbed the one I love and shimmied like a superstar to the remix work of Ricardo Autobahn (particularly his remix of Kyle Brylin's Committed). I've swooned over the vocal and lyrical stylings of Richard Hymas (particularly in his acclaimed Ben Waters Band) and his singalong choruses. And who hasn't been wowed by the stunning choreography that Melanie LaPatin brings to the US version of my current UK obsession, So You Think You Can Dance. For me, this is indeed a dream team and a dream come true...
Above you can see and ecoutez to a preview video of the album (tracklisting of all great artists here). It starts off with the delightful and intoxicating original version of Elouise's Lovers Rumba (which I reviewed in it's remix format just last week here). There's an added drama in the tune that wasn't as apparent in the remix and this works incredibly well. Then it's onto Swedish pop darling Neo, who wraps his soaring falsetto vocal around a swirling disco number called New Star. It's straight onto Glamaholic by Kaya (with Nelson Clemente), a blistering dance twister that wouldn't be out of place in a lip-synch for your life on RuPaul's Drag Race. The all too short preview is concluded with a number from one mr. Simon Curtis himself, entitled The Puppet Who Gave Himself Strings. It's nice to hear Simon do a straight up pop number that has both an 80s synth vibe and a lovely feel of Stock/Aitken/Waterman genius to it. It's also nice that at the very least both Elouise and Simon have been given songs that totally fit them. Elouise's theatrical oomph is well matched by Lover's Rumba, while Simon's Puppet seems to link in perfectly with the Nick kid who went independent :) I'm chomping at the bit to hear more and you just know that I'll do a full album overview as soon as it's released :) Be sure to follow NinthWave Records on twitter for more info.

Pop Potential Update: Blowing up in 2011 ~ Neo, The Scarletz, The Ultra Girls
0 comments Posted by ai at 2:51 AMHas everyone calmed down about Britney going dub-step yet? I have to say I'm warming to it by the second. Still, for when you've stopped holding it against me there are plenty other tasty treats out there for you to feast your pop chops on. Here are 3 of the most recent that could just explode like a giant party popper in 2011...
The Scarletz ~ Messed Up: Are you ready to experience something rather delicious and more-ish, a bit like your first Cadbury's Creme Egg of the year? That is what the debut single from hot girl group du jour, The Scarletz (website here), is like. A pseudo-reggae-lite jam that at time evokes memories of Ace of Base, is lined with some sumptuous horns, coated with the odd delightful intricate piano interlude and bounces along nicely thanks to the darkness of that terrific chorus that worms its way into your head and refuses to let go. It's a brilliant tune that has you singing along after just one listen. And is that a cymbal I hear in there? There are not enough cymbals in pure pop tunes... Herbal teas on me when you pass thru Brum :)
The Ultra Girls ~ Get The Party Started/Song 2: OK, now THIS is a mash-up. X Factor often thinks that a medley of two songs is a mash up. It's not. A mash up is placing one song over the template of another - in this case the genius melding of P!nk's Get This Party Started over the rollicking Song 2 by Blur. Power up, ultra girls because you are now entering Riot Grrrrl territory and it's a heady mix of rawking out with the devil horn fingers intertwined with poplicious vocals that show they can tackle multiple genres and make it sound feisty. Works incredibly well and shows how deserved that tour slot with Kylie is. Can't wait for their first single proper to be released :) PS, there is a naughty but nice interview with the girls over at DSTP!

Snap, Crackle (Fizzy) Pop: Weekly Catch Up March 7th 2010 - European Invasion
0 comments Posted by ai at 5:32 AMTHIS WEEK'S NEW ENTRIES:
- Magnus Carlsson ~ A Little Respect: Sigh. It's ever so minorly disappointing that a new Magnus song is a cover version of the Erasure classic. But it's so gosh darn festive and chirpy, that it's hard not to be swept along in the general perky S/A/W-esque beat of it all. Part of it the production and some of the video indeed looks like this should have been a Christmas single, it's practically all whistles and bells and slots nicely alongside Darin's Viva La Vida. Oh and the video is quite bizarre and bonkers - it basically seems to be a concept built around the fact that the song begins with the line "I tried to discover..." with Magnus hunting around some desolate wasteland and then re-animating that Michael Jackson HiStory statue for a bit of a boogie. Completely nuts, but very camp and engaging...
- Ola ~ Unstoppable: You can pretty much always rely on Ola to come up with something entirely kooky, totally loveable and brilliantly catchy. Built around a simple yet magnificent piano riff, this soaring pop tune is a sequel of sorts to his earlier song Natalie yet not a complete replica of that tune. Plus I love that Ola looks like he is having an absolutely ace time while he performs this song (click link above). And the "oh-oh-oh" in the chorus with the cheesy rhyming totally appeals to me. Mint! (oh dear...)
- Alcazar ~ Headlines: You know Disco Defenders made me completely fall irrevocably head over heels in love with Alcazar (and it's the sort of album I'm hoping Same Difference will come back with later this year). Headlines is going to be tagged onto a reissue of that and it totally fits. It has a lovely string laden start (reminiscent of Viva La Vida) and then launches into a slowly crescendo-ing song (with hilarious lyrics "got your number on my underwear" Really! Oh my...) before that killer chorus kicks in with it's steps-esque dance routine. What more could I want from a pop song?! How about one of those key changes that starts with an almost acapella song pause before re-launching the song into one of those frenzied celebrations of all things disco? Check! Amazeballs as the kids on the street are saying (not my street - those little tykes have a vocab that would make a sailor blush)...
- Neo ~ Human Frontier: This has overtaken Headlines as my fave melodifestivalen song of the moment. Sure he's a little Mika for some tastes, but he's a Hi-NRG Pete Hammond type remix of Mika and this song is a right little charmer. Plus he's using a cane in his performance of the song which is clearly a very good thing in pop, because it hasn't really been seen since Liberty X perved over tv screens for Just A Little. I just absolutely adore Neo - he has a falsetto high enough to make dogs wince, but I think he's a little bobby dazzler and this song has some remixes doing the rounds that are just dandy. I think an albm re-issue is due with this song too, so that's something to look out for (Higher and Bachelor are just fabbo)...
- Darin ~ You're Out Of My Life: After the utter splendidness that was the popalicious Viva La Vida and the Gaga before G'Gah was around sounding Flashback album, lovely elfin faced Darin returns with a classic smooth pop ballad. Basically the lad has had the career Shayne Ward should have had if 19 had spent any decent time with him. This song is just so dreamy and heavenly, it gets better with each listen. There's something so classic and timeless about it, and the type of song that just soars in it's simplicity. Great vocal too.
Others: Of course gabriella charts on top with the effervescent On A Mission; Sergey debuts with the generic but fun packed Alarm; bubbling under are that magnificent Blake Lewis (Love or Torture) and Erik Saade's bizarre but bonza Manboy (which I keep singing Manwhore too for some reason)... Probably a massive Simon Curtis debut next week too.... :)
Top 21 Songs of the Week:21 ~ Leona Lewis, I Got You
20 ~ Sergey Lazarev, Alarm (NE)

Andreas Johnson: "We Can Work It Out"
Anna Bergendahl: "This Is My Life"
Darin: You're Out Of My Life
Eric Saade: "Manboy"
Ola: "Unstoppable"
Pernilla Wahlgren: "Jag vill om du vågar"
Jessica Andersson: "I Did It For Love"
Peter Jöback: "Hollow"
Salem Al Fakir: "Keep On Walking"
Timoteij: "Kom"

0 comments Posted by ai at 6:54 AM

Duell nummer 1: Pain of Salvation vs Pernilla:
Jessica Marberger får vara stand-in.
Duell nummer 2: Pauline vs Crucified Barbara.
Pauline: ”Sucker For Love”
Crucified Barbara: "Heaven of Hell"
Duell nummer 3: Kalle Moraeus & Orsa Spelmän vs NEO
Duell nummer 4: Alcazar vs Jessica Andersson
Alcazar "Headlines":
Discotime! Har ni tänkt på första textraden: "Got your number on my underwear".
Jessica Andersson "I Did It For Love":

- Lill-Babs (ESC 1961, Norges MGP 1969, MF 1973)
- Ann-Christine Bärnsten (MF 1975)
- Claes-Göran Hederström (ESC 1968, MF 1975)
- Svante Thuresson (MF 1966, MF 1967, MF 1968, MF 1969, MF 1977, MF 2007)
Duell 1:
Artist: Pain Of Salvation ”Road Salt”
tävlar mot
Artist: Pernilla Wahlgren ”Jag vill om du vågar”
Duell 2:
Artist: Pauline ” Sucker For Love”
tävlar mot
Artist: Crucified Barbara ”Heaven Or Hell”
Duell 3:
Artist: Kalle Moraeus & Orsa Spelmän ”Underbart”
tävlar mot
Artist: NEO ”Human Frontier”
Duell 4:
Artist: Alcazar ”Headlines”
tävlar mot
Artist: Jessica Andersson ”I Did It For Love”

http://svt.se/2.123451/1.1870509/tjuvlyssna_pa_bidragen?lid=puff_1870509&lpos=rubrik
Startordning i Malmö:
1. Sibel - ”Stop”
5. Anna Bergendahl - ”This Is My Life”
8. Peter Jöback – ”Hollow”
Upphovsmän: Anders Hansson, Fredrik Kempe
Typisk Jöback-ballad i Kempe-stil.

Sista semifinalen går av stapel in Malmö 27 februari.

Neo - Debut: Ah Neo. Let me get this out of the way. I preferred Neo as a Linus, but I am warming to his new name and curly locks ever so slightly, now I have disassociated it from the crappy Matrix sequels. If - like me - you are patiently waiting for the latest bound-to-be-brilliant albums from BWO, Mika, Scissor Sisters and perhaps a new b-side from Same Difference, then wait no more! Neo has cobbled together an album that mixes together all those sounds and yet somehow manages to be something a little bit separate and distinct. Naturally, all the decent blogs have already picked up on his curly haired, black shirted amazingness including bobbypops and the lovely Nick Alienhitter. And why wouldn't they? His cover version of Leo Sayer's You Make Me Feel Like Dancing which sounds equally retro and modernised and stands alongside "tributes" I Don't Feel Like Dancing and If You Can't Dance quite perfectly as an ace trifecta of pop aceness. His latest single Higher is ever such a little like a modern day remake of Take On Me, but with less falsetto than Magnus Carlsson's Live Forever. It soars from the get go and Neo's voice has this great warming deep tonal quality that makes it stand out from his pop peers. Given the right promotion, Higher could be a massive single in England without reliance on the cybertronic trance elements that seem to be topping the charts right now, and may sound a bit dated in 12 months time. Flower Power Super Girl is poised to be a single due to the fact that it's just as catchy as any BWO single - and currently more cutting edge than the template that Swedish supergroup are reliant on. Bachelor could also be a single, and in the mix are some gorgeous ballads that soar freely alongside lovely tunes like Mika's Happy Ending and BWO's Will My Arms Be Strong Enough. January 23rd is (poor Darren) classed as the most depressing day of the year in England - it's the day that everyone gets their post Christmas credit card bills, the weather is miserable and Ben Adams is unlikely to win Celebrity Big Brother. Head over to this link and check out some of Neo's quite delicious and uplifting pop tuneage and put a little sunshine in your soul. Really - i want to pat him on the back and hug him for positively brightening up my January :)
