Red Nose Day does Pop - ft Miranda/JLS, Take That, Subo, The Wanted & McFly
0 comments Posted by ai at 6:36 AMIt has more oft than not been bemoaned of late that there are a paucity of decent shows on television to perform your pop wares. I'm not sure this is entirely true anymore - there are numerous day & night time talk shows, X Factor and Dancing on Ice, and if you are particularly lucky you might end up in an episode of Hollyoaks while Ste snogs the moustache off Brendan in the background. Lucky bastard. However, these shows tend to be for those acts that are already (more or less) established (though The Overtones & Julian Velard managed to break through last week). The "Comic Relief" telethon managed to continue that trend by reeling in some big names to perform their latest music - often in a slightly unusual way. Here are some of my favourites...
JLS ft Miranda crew ~ Eyes Wide Shut. I absolutely what I like to call love Miranda. Her sitcom is a reasonable facsimilie of what my life is like on a day to day basis. So of course I was delighted that she was doing a little Comic Relief sketch (which was amazing - click here to view) AND dancing/rapping with the JLS boys. The dance routine is the culmination of the sketch show prior to it, which included such classic dance lessons as "Lady Gaga Feel The Beat/Lady Gaga Dress of Meat" and a cameo from oft quoted in the show Heather Small. If you haven't learned to love Miranda yet, how in the hell are you gonna love yourself? Can I get a "what have you done today to make you feel proud"?! Now enjoy the clip above, and bare with while I pause on lovely Gary in a tank top...
Peter Kaye ft Subo ~ I Know Him So Well. The anthem (though not "Anthem") from Chess is one of my fave songs. Steps did it well. Whitney and Cissy souled it up. John & Daniel excelled at it. But nothing tops the original Babs/Elaine version and Peter and Susan Boyle have done a rather good parody of it for the show. I'm not sure anyone who hasn't grown up knowing and loving the original video as much as I have will appreciate some of the finer points, but it's a jolly good chortle nonetheless...(it's the original above as the PK/Subo version is being sold on iTunes and all proceeds go to charity. Go forth and purchase)...
Take/Fake That ~ Happy Now. Oh! Kidz is barely over (after all that money spent on the video) and suddenly we're on to single 3 (good choice though) from Progress. The video concept above is basically some of Britain's finest comics (including lovely Catherine Tate) auditioning to be a Take That tribute band by recreating some of their iconic looks. These include the Do What U Like video, Back For Good and The Flood. They also performed the song sans Fake That earlier in the show, which you can watch by clicking here. Waiting for single 4 please. It's BeeGees does 2011-tastic.
McFly ~ All About You (sort of). It is common knowledge that the best Comic Relief single ever released is Bananarama ft Lanananeenanoonoo, Help. Instant classic. Second to that is the bonkers Who Do You Think You Are by Spice Girls. However, a very close third is the lovely tender ballad by my McFly ragamuffins. They didn't perform this on the show the last night in it's original version, but rewrote the lyrics to thank the staff at OxFam who had raised millions for comic relief. It's just Danny and Tom, but it's quite sweet anyway and makes me sad that their very tremendulent song That's The Truth didn't have a more sterling performance on the UK charts.
Other highlights:
- The Wanted performed their very good indeed single Gold Forever, not to be confused with One Direction's Forever Young. Read Nick's latest pop update for a spot on and concise review :)
- Adele performed Someone Like You. That woman is everywhere and unstoppable and I for one am not complaining. I have recently mastered this on the piano and I sound brilliant ;)
- Not music, but Dr Who returned for a madcap mini adventure with La Pond and a strangely foxy Rory. I have no idea what was happening but I'm hoping DanP76 will enlighten me. Can't wait for the return on April 23rd

Weekend Supplement ~ week ending March 13th 2011 ft Princes & Rogues, Shayne Ward & The Wanted!
0 comments Posted by ai at 3:37 AMEee by gum, you go away for a week to Costa Blanca (*whispers - Benidorm*) and have a nice self imposed internet exile only to come back and find yourself spending more time online in one evening than you would if there had been no such exile. Still, I did read four and a half books last week (still finishing one), so can't all be bad. One of the highlights of coming back was to find a ready prepared video from my beloved Princes & Rogues. Now previously in Princes & Rogues, Cameron left the group for pastures new and there is now a new prince-slash-rogue in the mix. He is the dark brooding one, fingering a guitar on the left of the above video, which is their most recent youtube cover. This time, they have tackled the Bruno Mars hit 'Grenade' and glee-ed it up something spectacular. As I've mentioned before, what I really adore about P&R (apart from Ashley in a bowtie and Derek's accent) is their ability to not just deliver layered vocal harmonies, but actually make them an integral part of the tune. The guitar is a nice addition, but it's their blend of voices that really make this work. New Directions on Glee do this from time to time when they are not trying to re-enact pop videos, but the Dalton Warblers really excel (spreadsheet) at it and this reminds me of one of their top notch performances. I do get a bit excited by the way when it goes from finger clicking goodness into ebullient handclapping enthusiasm. One thing, tsk to putting your shoes on the settee. I hope you wiped your feet before you came in today :P Do follow Princes & Rogues on twitter, I am hoping for massive things from them in 2011.
Top 21 songs of the week:
Despite lots of musical happenings going on at the moment, I am still obsessed with lots of songs from melodifestivalen and they are cluttering up my chart. Eric Saade gets a third week at the top (though The Feeling are nipping at his heels) which matches his chart topping debut on the real Swedish pop charts. Hurrah. And some stellar tv performances this week (on Alan Titmunch no less) boosted the brillo The Wanted single quite high and kept my interest in Shayne Ward's Obsession track for just a little while longer...
21 ~ The Moniker, Oh My God (NE)

Boy Band Mania ~ the newbies... (The Overtones, The Wanted, Big Time Rush)
0 comments Posted by ai at 6:52 AMIn terms of my obsession with boy bands/man bands, I've never really grown up. I'm still that enthusiastic tween who eagerly embraces each new act in the marketplace and then decides whether they are worthy of my loyalty or not. This means I have listened to a lot of crap over the years, but also been completely rewarded with some excellent tunes. Here are just some of the latest crop to tickle my fancy...
The Overtones ~ Good Ol' Fashioned Love: In the music world, everything new needs to be packaged & linked to something old in order to get people to connect to it. Slotting in nicely between The Puppini Sisters (40s Andrew Sisters style harmonies) and The Pipettes (60s/70s quirky pop-dance), The Overtones are a clean cut group of 5 lads offering Duffy-esque tunes (without the annoying Pepsi advert) in a post Glee, harmony ridden world. It seems unfair to compare The Overtones to anyone, however, as they have enough charm and unique musical interpretation to stand out on their own. They've already built up quite the following through supporting Matt Goss, being the darlings of the ITV morning scene and littering youtube with a variety of surprisingly daring cover versions.
Of the fine, fine cover versions the standouts include a spinetingling reading of Don't Make Me Over, a spellbinding version of In The Still Of The Night (a really key example of where the harmonised vocals really enhance and contribute to the essence of the track) and a perky Why Do Fools Fall In Love. Each cover seems like they've taken it back to basics and built it back up around their individual sound and style. It's an absolute labour of love and shows their ability to recreate well known tunes rather than just throw out a quick harmony or two. It all adds up to a real treat of an album. I'm hoping to get to see them live sometime this year and have all my fingers and toes crossed for some Christmas music from them because I can only imagine how they will enhance the most wonderful time of the year :)
Also worthy:

- The Wanted ~ The Wanted: On paper, The Wanted should be just another casualty of the put-together-by-a-label boy band genre. There is something about the 5 boys who make up Britain's latest boy band sensation that has helped them surpass this. Whether it's their down to earth, everyman appeal or their ability to make every teen and tween on the planet a little weak at the knees is irrelevant - if they didn't have some sparkling tunes to back this up, they would be faster than you can say Billiam. They stormed onto the scene with the excellent All Time Low which demonstrated groups such as this can deliver current sounding pop tunes without misjudging their audience (The Club is Alive by JLS, I'm looking at you!). The album continues to provide the listener with a polished, sleek sounding set of pop tunes - any number of which could follow ATL to the upper echelons of the chart. High and Low glistens and sparkles from being imbued with passion and personality from the boys, choral touches and an immense chorus. it's like a Christmas single waiting to happen. Replace Your Heart also needs to be a single - it actually delightfully uplifting with another chorus that soars as high as all outdoors. It's boy band, but it's distinctly Wanted boy band. The album is a cohesive set of tunes that flow together nicely and should be just on the right side of cool to help them enter a bigger marketplace. Plus! They have a lovely range of footwear :) One Direction could hardly model themselves on anyone better...
- Big Time Rush ~ BTR: American boy band du jour are Big Time Rush, a fictional band put together for a Nickleodeon tv comedy. Now in it's second season, it's like a sillier Glee but certainly not without it's charm - and certainly not without the tunes. They present themselves as a cross between The Click Five and One Direction doing P!nk, and their debut album has some real winning moments that could see them easily become the millenial Monkees! Til I Forget About You is a big singalong tune with a perky beat and chanting chorus that imbeds itself firmly in your brain. Boyfriend is a dreamy treat for any tween and has your foot tapping along, reminiscing about the days when you were able to singalong to pop confectionary like this without anyone judging you. At times they come across like a junior version of The Script while other times they are matching note for note the current pop sound of female contemporaries like the aforementioned P!nk and Katy perry. What it lacks in originality, it makes up for in catchy tunes, charm and enthusiasm. Listen without prejudice :)

Tomorrow - the return of established boybands!

Video breakdown: Joe McElderry (Ambitions) & The Wanted (Heart Vacancy)
0 comments Posted by ai at 7:29 AMI may have had a change of heart re: Joe and Ambitions. I still would have liked to see Joe kick off with an original tune, but the video has won me over. I still totally adore the Donkeyboy song, but this is a perky, jolly version that almost makes it Ambitions:The Glee remix. PLUS! Dance routine! Immensicles. Adding to a boypop video breakdown update are The Wanted who quickly established themselves where millions have failed before as the boyband du jour. Their second single, Heart Vacancy is out soon. Let's see what pop's most eligible young men (collectively) have come up with!
Joe McElderry - Ambitions
- So many youtube videos start with an advertisement now. Still Charlie St Cloud looks quite good and Zac Efron still has quite good movie star hair.
- (PS, I nicked the shot above from D'Luv. You can read his Joe thoughts here...)
- Oh, it's on. Joe gets out of a yellow cab clutching something in his hot little hand. His quiff works for him as he wonders through the downtown streets of Anytown USA
- Only don't be fooled pop pickers! Your eyes have been deceived! deceived I tells ya! The town is moving! It's actually a soundstage with lots of people working on Joe's video shoot. how postmodern! How breaking the fourth wall!
- To be fair, young Joseph looks like he is having a whale of a time, and I do quite enjoy the strutting through the streets moments at around 25seconds...
- There's bunting! Simon Cowell loves bunting! It was all over the Same Difference We R One video. Joe grabs a lady friend and then this happens...
- DANCE ROUTINE! It's fist fist fist fist, shoulder shimmy, arm wave. you can't really go wrong with that can you? It's very Steps/Same Difference/SClubHoweverMany and that's a-ok with me.
- The dancing is clearly a watercooler moment as americans might say. This is evidenced at 58seconds when Joe walks past some strumpet leaning against a watercooler! Amazing. I love a bit of in your face not at all subtle literal interpretation. And I'm not even being sarcastic.
- Oh Gay J, I am loving the vid. I'm being won over! There is an orchestra setting up and some silly billy drops his papers all over the streets. I was a bit disappointed Joe didn't go and help him. he always seemed like such a gentleman.
- Oh phew. he has gone to help :) Gentleman status fully restored. And what does silly billy do? Throw them in the air and launches into the dance routine! Amazing. I always said Joe was very musical theatre and this kind of cements that for me. It's an ebullient fun loving moment, and adds a certain joie de vivre to what ultimately is quite a melancholy (lyrically) tune...
- People are dancing all over the place. it reminds me a bit of Hi-Fidelity from Kids From Fame. There are some good looking fellas behind Joe giving it a shimmy and a shake, and the dedicated chappy doesn't even get distracted for even a second. My cosmic horn makes me pause the video to get a better look though :P
- Pause at around 2m14s and you'll get a pretty good idea of what the inevitable X Factor live performance will look like.
- Let's marvel a little more at the dance routine - the bit at around 2m30s with arms in the air, then arms to the floor is taken directly from Mamma Mia's Dancing Queen routine on the docks.
- I'm actually quite disappointed that the end of the video is nigh, but little J is growing up because that is some serious sultry seduction he's giving to the camera with his eyes!!
- I can confirm that I think I have been pretty much won over by the video. I'm so easy :P
- Loving the footwear boys. Boots are so this season (and a bit last season as well, but some fashions transcend more than one season so it is ok). Also loving the neutral colours going on. Boyband walking down a deserted street is a classic nod to those that have paved the way before you!
- There are some nice close ups of the boys too. Some chiselled cheekbones and cheeky grins happening. Pause at exactly 9 seconds and marvel at the facial contours of Max. You could slice cheese on that structure!
- It's all very serious, though there is a little bit of laddish tomfoolery going on at about 25s and they all find something quite amusing about 10 seconds later. Perhaps someone has let one rip?
- The glorious chorus starts and the boys all sing together. Meanwhile, night time has fallen and all the locals are gathering in some beautiful church courtyard to watch an old movie. I hope it's Barefoot In The Park. That's a Jane Fonda classic!
- During the second verse, I shift allegiences between which member is currently "the fittest" almost as often as the camera flits between them. Back at the movies, a young lady is backlit by the projector giving her an angelic glow...
- The boys are now at the movies (that young lady finds gently amusing), and having a right good singsong at the back. This proves that this is just a casual movie event. If it was the Vue they would have been kicked out by now :P
- Just prior to the 2m30s mark, the guy in the movie with classic 40s slicked back hair gives the camera a smouldering look. Young Lady finds this most enticing and clutches her hankerchief to her bosom. I would mock her for this, but I am convinced that Patrick Dempsey gave me such a look once in a Grey's Anatomy...
- It's now the middle 8 of the song, and Curly Haired Wanted is belting it out. Most pleasingly too. Meanwhile, the locals are getting a bit annoyed at the distraction. Honestly, some people have no appreciation for pop music. Even the stars of the film are getting jittery, while Young Lady gets well excited!
- Oh my goodness. 40s Movie Star has legged it out of the screen and gone for the hand of Young Lady. One of the locals quite rightly finds this a bit disturbing, gets the vapours and has to have a bit of a lie down. I would have just had a mint baileys myself to take the edge off...
- Young Lady has gone to live in the movies. Don't we all wish we could do that. I would live in Mean Girls. Or Love, Actually. Probably flit between the two. Anyway, the locals are over the shock and loving this happy ending. There's quite an amusing shot of the rest of the movie stars trying, but failing, to get through the screen. Sigh. They don't get the message - Young Lady filled 40s Movie Star's heart vacancy.
- And that's it. Tres bon. PS, kudos on being embeddable. Unlike Joe. Grrr.

Songs I Should Have Already Written About Part One: The UK Edition
0 comments Posted by ai at 4:26 AMOh cock. I am well behind with all the songs and music I wanted to write about this week. The week has essentially gotten away with me. I did a car boot sale (don't ask). The washing machine broke. Again. My mp3 player broke. I am now broke. I walked into a hanging basket of pansies and hurt my nose. On the plus side, I am finally enjoying The Alchemyst book which I've been struggling with for a while. See? Peserverence pays off! Magnif. Anyway, here are songs that really should have been written about by now. I'm not very cutting edge am I?
- Leddra Chapman - Summer Song: Want to hear a slice of summer pop heaven? Then you could do a lot worse then checking out the ever so lovely Leddra. I'm chagrinned to learn that actually this is her third single from her debut album, Telling Tales, so I have some catching up to do. Summer Song is a lush, catchy, adorable tune that mixes the ethos of I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker with the quirky and clever instrumentation of something like Eurovision winner Lena's Satellite. Leddra's voice is a charm by itself, but clever and persistant tunes like this make the overall product an absolute winner...
- Alesha - Drummer Boy: Songs with a militant drum beat in can be very good. Check out Abba's Soldiers, Simon Curtis' Left Right Left and (for the softer side of sears) Gabriella Cilmi's Defender. None of which tells you much about Alesha's comeback song. Well it is more Lets Get Excited type creation than The Boy Does Nothing innovation. This isn't a bad thing though and the song does have an abrasive charm that grows on you with each listen. It also reminds me of how much I actually like Alesha doing ballsy pop tunes rather than swoony ballads. Bring on album three :)
- Eliza Doolittle - Pack Up: Oh good gracious, I'm months behind on Eliza but i've finally paid her the attention she is due. As it seems has the rest of Britain, with this song being a genuine sleeper hit. The voice is just the right mix of clear expression with emotive injection; Like Leddra, the song has an effortless knack of making you feel that the melody and lyrics just magically came together to create this sunny moment of pop genius. The album, btw, is also incredibly addictive and well constructed. Shame on me for not paying attention :P
- Ellie Goulding - The Writer: I like Ellie. I think she has produced some decent pop tunes and an enjoyable album. But i've not fully connected and that sometimes happens with pop stars. however, this track is sheer beauty. It retains the production charm of her previous singles but the lyrics and her most sincere vocal performance to date elevate this track to something quite magical. Plus there's a quite good remix over at arjanwrites. Oh, and Wish I Stayed should be the next single per favor...
- The Saturdays ~ Missing You: There is something not quite right sometimes with The Sats. Forever is Over was not a good choice of lead single from the second album, and although Ego was very good there were no further singles such as the illuminating One Shot or the funky Wordshaker. Bah. So now the world is on not-album three and Missing You has taken a while to grow on me. It's essentially a ballad set to a slightly rave-esque backing track (a la One Shot by JLS). It's not a bad track, but it doesn't have the enticement of Up or goofy charm of Just Can't Get Enough. Headlines apparently has some doozies so I'm not giving up just yet...
- The Wanted - All Time Low: By now if you have read this blog more than once you will know of my obsession with boybands. Yet somehow, I've resisted to an extent The Wanted. I initially wrote about them back in April and since then All Time Low has taken over England and become more and more addictive with each listen. The song is definitely a grow-er and although I'm not ready to declare them the new Take That (or the new anything) just yet, they've done well for a put together boyband - and next single Heart Vacancy is quite fine. Odd fact - they are number one with All Time Low, and All Time Low (the band) are number 100! Symmetry!!

Snap, Crackle (Fizzy) Pop: Weekly Catch Up 11th April 2010 (ft Gavin Mikhail, Part Six, The Wanted, Kyrah, Kameron Martinez, Allo Darlin & Eric Saade)
0 comments Posted by ai at 1:44 AMAGH! It's Sunday already (unless it's not when you read this - just insert whatever day you are reading it on instead to make it relevant and topical!) which means I totally skipped my "5 Song Friday" post I was going to type up. Oh well. My obsession with Matt Dusk has continued well into the weekend, and his feel good vibe has rubbed off on me ~ some good stuff at work, a nice Saturday with friends and a surprising upgrade on my mobile (cell) phone. Hurrahs all round and on with the songs that stood out this week :)
- Gavin Mikhail ~ The Climb: I like Gavin. He's good honest people :) And he has one of the best, largely undiscovered power ballads in Brave (review here) I've ever heard (that I still think you can download free here). In the meantime and inbetween time (prize if you get that defunct pop group reference!) he has been uploading cover versions of songs to youtube, and his rather lovely reading of the Miley song is very nice indeed. It's quite earnest, got a bit of heart and soul in there and is injected with some personality. See Joe McElderberry, this is how it's done. Now if Gavin could become massive please, I'd be quite happy with that.
- Part Six ~ Showtime: German boyband Part Six have just released their second album (Showtime) and the title track is entirely agreeable. For some reason, it's only out in Poland but if you want to track it down, you can purchase it here. Showtime is an upbeat, funky little pop number that ticks all the boyband boxes such as calling girls "baby", being utterly unthreatening in their sexiness and generally whipping out urban tinged choruses with rather nice harmonies. It's a bit reminiscent of Blue and JLS, but I can't stop singing it and it makes me want to shake my "boo-tay" so that can only be a good thing. Plus the video is ever so reminiscent of the first part of Steps "Stomp", and days of a week in a song always wins me over (as does counting - see Kyrah!) PS their other single from the album, The Love Is Over, is equally bonza. I previously wrote a much wittier post about them here...
- The Wanted ~ All Time Low: Talking of boybands, British ones tend to have quite a hard time breaking through (unless they have been on X Factor and even then there's a FutureProof for every JLS) - indeed this blog is littered with the remains of V, Digital, Pacific Avenue, Switch 22 and Avenue. The latest to win me over and give fame a bash are The Wanted, whose myspace has several clips on of tunes that could do quite well actually if people just gave them a chance. All Time Low is an energetic, pulsating disco throbber with some nice strings, beats and a swirling chorus that is nicely polished - it's almost what Coldplay would sound like if they gave themselves a dance remix. They continue this vibe with tracks like Behind Bars, which is a bit more aggressive and rocky; and they get all serious (as boybands should from time to time) with Heart Vacancy. I'm easily wooed by boybands, I'm eager for a new era of boyband massiveness and if the boys want to woo me more at Nightingales on the 24th, then I'm ok with that :)
- Kyrah ~ Uh Oh Ah: Sometimes you just need a song that grabs you by the shoulders and gives you a darn good shaking. Uh Oh Ah is that song. It's incredibly immediate with it's sliding synths & electro beats, a catchy chorus - with counting!!! - and it's morals-of-an-alley-cat type lyrics. Sure it's a reminiscent of Ke$ha, but I enjoy a good slutty yarn as much as the next bloke and it's a great getting ready to go out song over mimosas. Apparently, according to Poptrashaddicts, there are lots of sexy remixes coming that can only make this aural orgasm groan harder! Score!
- Kameron Martinez ~ Kinkyy: It's so kinky in fact that it deserves an extra 'y' - this completely deserves to be after Kyrah because this addictive, insiduous electro-pop tune is just complete filth telling you all the places and positions he's going to do it with you ("up against the wall/on the kitchen floor/baby tie my hands up give me a little more"). I almost blushed except I've done it all myself :P It's a very minimalistic song, but I'm completely addicted in the same way I was to JC Chasez's All Day Long I Dream About Sex. And in fact, you can download the song legally by clicking this link. Be sure to check this out and then take a cold shower :)
- Allo Darlin ~ Dreaming: What a gorgeous little surprise this is! It's a floating little ditty that is as wistful in the lyrics as it is uplifting in the melody. Adding to the juxtaposition is the delightful female vocal playing off against the hunky deep bass vocal of guest singer Bobby Monster from my adored Pipettes. It's a song that absolutely makes you want to fall in love, and a quirky use of instruments (is that a ukelele?!) keep it fascinating from start to finish. And it's available as a free download! The heavenliness just keeps on coming - can't wait for an album (lovely lovely video is below)...
