I would not mind being in Athens, Greece now. I love to spend Christmas in this buzzing, messy town where nobody seems to sleep or waste too many hours in their homes during Christmas.  The city and the restaurants and bars are crowded with people. What a huge contrast to Stockholm where the streets are dead and abandoned, people are watching the same Disney cartoons as the last 50 years and the only restaurant you may found is at McDonalds.

Jag skulle inte ha något emot att vara I Aten och Grekland just nu. Det är helt underbart att spendera julen i denna stökiga stad som aldrig verkar sova och där de flesta personer inte slösar bort många timmar hemmavid. Stan, restauranger och barer är fullsmockade med folk. Vilken kontrast mot Stockholm där varenda gata är död och övergiven, folk sitter framför Tv-apparaterna och tittar på samma Disney-klipp som började sändas 1960 och där man i bästa fall kan hitta en öppen McDonalds ifall kylskåpet är tomt.


To avoid eating fast food, I now have prepared carrot- and turnip dishes (typical in Finland). My “lack-of-family” friends are coming on Christmas eve and most unlikely there will to be no shortage of food. Instead of watching Donald Duck we will listen to light weight Greek Christmas songs (the more dramatic ones we save for late night).
Så för att slippa äta snabbmat har jag nu tillagat både morotslåda och kålrotslåda. Mina ’familjelösa’ vänner kommer på julafton och det lär knappast råda någon brist på mat. Istället för att titta på Kalle Anka ska vi lyssna på Grekiska jullåtar – den ena lättviktigare än den andra – men vad gör det.

Two videos, two bands and two songs to remember from this week in August. Finnish Lordi and Swedish Drifters. What do they have in common? Not much except that Lordi won Eurovision 2006 and the Dutch entry "Sha La Lie" with Sieneke participated in the same contest 2010.

The cover 'dansband' version by Drifters shows that a song like "Sha La Lie", which got so much negative feedback, before and under Eurovision, ends up being a kind of success after all. Maybe a compensation for the failure in Oslo and it certainly generates some money to the composer Pierre Kartner, alias Father Smurf.



Since the victory of Lordi in Athens 2006 I have hardly seen or heard anything about the group. Maybe it would have been different if I lived in Finland. Despite the fact that I'm not a fan of monsters, nor today's metal/heavy rock (thanks heaven for Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep....), I still appreciate this new song from Lordi.

Back in Stockholm which is covered by a tropical heat wave. For the first time in my life I experience a Stockholm hotter than Athens. There is something going on with the climate.

Tillbaka i ett Stockholm invaderat av tropisk hetta. För första gången upplever jag att Stockholm är varmare än Aten. Det är något som sker med vårt klimat. 

I feel a bit sad to be back - as always when I returning from Greece. This time it was different with a sad and kind of hopeless feeling covering the country. A lot of people are suffering and the young ones want to leave the country. I also feel frustrated over the media reporting in our countries, which do not reflect the actual situation. Despite what is written and communicated there is always two sides of the coin. And it is always important to have time for a coffee or some food with good friends.



Det känns lite vemodigt att vara tillbaka på hemmaplan - som alltid när jag återvänder från Grekland. Den här gången var annorlunda då det kändes att en hopplöshet lagt sig som ett fuktigt täcke över landet. Massor av människor har det svårt och de unga vill lämna sitt hemland. Jag känner också en viss frustration över medias rapportering på hemmaplan då den inte alltid reflekterar den faktiska situationen. Oavsett vad som skrivs, och var, så finns det alltid två sidor av myntet. Och det är fortfarande viktigt att umgås med vänner oavsett det är en kopp kaffe eller en bit mat.








Athens and Stockholm - two charming capitals but in different ways. Maybe it would be a perfect combination to live 50/50 in these cities.
